How To?: Voice-based Communication in SL

Below is a nice write-up on SL-based chatting with a voice chat software called Vivix. It's worth the read if any of you ESL teachers are interested in audible communication within Second Life. Thanks to pathfinder@lindenlab.com for the information.

Mister Kip

Greetings,

Some of you have expressed an interest in using voice communication in Second Life as part of your education work. While we do not currently have an integrated solution, I have set up a couple optional systems to let you explore the possibilities of voice communication in Second Life. Please give me feedback if you try them out (
pathfinder@lindenlab.com). Thanks!
Option 1: Proximity-based Voice Chat in Campus region. I have set up three areas on the Campus region that support proximity-based voice chatting. The voice chat software is called Vivox. If you'd like to test it out, here's how it works:

1) You will first need a Vivox account. Please contact Dave Verratti (
dave.verratti@vivox.com) from Vivox for more details. Your Vivox username must exactly match your Second Life name (without spaces), so be sure to give Dave that information in the email.

2) Once your account is set up, Dave will email you back with login instructions and where to download the Vivox client.

3) Run the Vivox client in the background while you are in Second Life. The following areas on Campus are set up to automatically detect when someone is within range. When you enter these areas, Vivox will automatically add you to a voice chat channel that is linked to that area. Then you can hear and chat with everyone at that location. When you leave the area in Second Life, you'll be automatically removed from the voice chat channel.
